JPRS Will Start RFC-based Japanese JP Domain Name Registration and Management Services from July 10
- Upon Agreement of Global Framework for Internationalized Domain Name (IDN) Registration -
Japan Registry Services Co., Ltd. (JPRS; Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Koki Higashida), the company responsible for the management and administration of the .JP top-level domain and operation of the domain name system (DNS), announced today that its Japanese JP domain name registration and management services will comply with RFCs for Internationalized Domain Names (IDN) from July 10, in accordance with the release of ICANN document of June 20 (US time) regarding the framework for IDN registrations, which has been developed collaboratively by JPRS, ICANN, and other domain name registries in the world.
JPRS had originally planned to start RFC-based services from March 20, in accordance with the publication of IDN-related RFCs on March 7. On March 13, however, ICANN proposed that the uniform framework should be developed for the smooth deployment of IDN throughout the world. Supporting this approach and going along with the world, JPRS made a press release to Japanese media on March 17 and posted an English translation on its website on March 20. In the release JPRS announced that it would start RFC-based services after agreement with ICANN on the framework.
As a result of repeated discussions following ICANN meetings held in Rio de Janeiro in late March, JPRS and other domain name registries participating in discussion agreed with ICANN, and ICANN reached a consensus on the framework. ICANN then released "Guidelines for the Implementation of Internationalized Domain Names" on June 20. The Guidelines define character sets that can be used for IDN, and set forth the requirement for registries to establish language-specific registration and administration rules. The Guidelines conform to what JPNIC and JPRS have proposed, and Japanese JP domain names are perfectly in line with the framework.
With the cooperation of JP registrars, JPRS aims to expand the DNS environment such that all Japanese JP domain names become usable in compliance with RFCs. This will allow users to access Japanese JP domain names through RFC-compatible browsers and applications which will be released in the future. As for the i-Nav™ plug-in for IE (http://jprs.jp/i-Nav/) offered since October 2002, JPRS plans to upgrade it to an RFC-compatible version. Furthermore, JPRS will promote the development and spread of IDN-compatible applications, in cooperation with JDNA, JPNIC, and other IDN-related organizations.
