Intec NetCore and JPRS Start Joint Measurement of Next Generation Internet Diffusion
Intec NetCore, Inc.
Japan Registry Services Co., Ltd.(JPRS)
Intec NetCore, Inc. (iNetCore; Office: Koto-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Tetsuo Nakao), research and consulting company of the next generation Internet technology, and Japan Registry Services Co., Ltd. (JPRS;Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Koki Higashida), the company responsible for the management and administration of .JP top-level domain (*1) and operation of the domain name system (DNS) (*2), have started joint IPv6 (*3) diffusion measurement using JP domain name. IPv6 is the next generation Internet Protocol standard.
Communications standards for the Internet is now entering a period of transition from IPv4 to IPv6. Intec NetCore and JPRS measure the transition and publish the result with status of the progress. The result is intended to be the IPv6 transition indicator, available for various companies and organizations. Intec NetCore and JPRS also utilize the result as a case example applicable to IPv6 deployment in countries where such transition is starting. JPRS surveys registration status of JP domain names, and, according to that survey, Intec NetCore studies IPv6 transition status in both business and home networks.
Mr. Takashi Arano,( Intec NetCore, Senior Managing Director, CTO and Board member of the IPv6 Forum (*4)), said "Currently IPv6 is deploying all over the world as well as in Japan. It is significant to measure how much Ipv6 is penetrating and to accumulate these records from the early stage while the technology development and standardization process of IPv6 is proceeding. We would like to collaborate with some similar projects which are currently underway in Europe. Through these international activities, we hope this metric to be used as one of global standards."
Mr. Koki Higashida, (President, JPRS), also comments on this measurement: "JPRS, as the company playing an important role in development of the Internet infrastructure, actively collaborates with various organizations in promoting IPv6, and this joint research is one of these activities. We believe this research helps smooth evolution of current DNS architecture, where mainly IPv4 is applied, into the IPv6-aware one in accordance with the future spread of IPv6."
Reference
*1 JP Domain Name
Domain name, also known as "the address on the Internet", is the identifier of computers on the Internet, and is used for URL (website address) and e-mail address. Domain names ending with JP are classified into such categories as Organizational type, Geographical type, and General-use domain name, and are managed by JPRS.
*2 Domain Name System
The system that translates domain name into IP (Internet protocol) address.
*3 IPv6
IPv6 is the abbreviation of Internet Protocol Version 6. IPv4 is commonly used now, and its next version is IPv6. Every computer connected to IP network requires unique IP address for identification. However, the number of IPv4 address is limited, and there is a growing shortage of IPv4 addresses. IPv6 provides a much larger global addresses space, and is expected to be used to control household appliance and automobiles with improved security and other capabilities.
*4 IPv6 Forum
IPv6 Forum is a world-wide consortium, established in 1999 by networking vendors, telecommunication companies, and research organizations. It carries out IPv6 enlightenment activities to the public. Mr. Arano is the only one Board member elected from Asia Pacific region.
