JPRS Closes the Service for Browsing Web Sites with Japanese Domain Names through Internet Explorer

JPRS has decided to close the resolution service for browsing Japanese domain names using Microsoft Internet Explorer, as of the end of May. This service has been in operation since August 2001.

JPRS will continue to be responsible for registration and administration of Japanese JP domain names, and for domain name system operations. It will also promote the development of an environment for using the Japanese JP domain names.

This browsing service enabled users to reach a specified web site by entering a Japanese JP domain name (excluding "http://") in the IE address bar (5.0 or later versions). However, as RealNames Corporation (Redwood City, California; CEO & President Keith Teare), which has provided the technologies to this service, announced cancellation of business operations on May 13, JPRS accordingly decided to close the service. Although RealNames announced that they would continue to provide service until June 30, 2002 by a reduced staff, JPRS determined that the service should be closed after considering the difficulty of providing stable service.

IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) Working Group discussions concerning the technologies related to Internationalized domain names, including Japanese JP domain names, have completed, and examination for standardization is now at the final stage. When the examination is complete, they will be published as an RFC (Request for Comments), where specifications of the standard will be determined.

As the RFC will be published in the near future, JPRS is now preparing for the launch of Japanese JP domain name services. Additionally, in cooperation with the Japanese Domain Names Association (JDNA), JPRS will continue to focus on establishing more useful environment for Japanese JP domain names, including development of compliant applications.
