JPRS Introduces Japanese Characters into Prefecture Labels of Prefecture Type JP Domain Names

Japan Registry Services Co., Ltd. (JPRS: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Koki Higashida) today announced that it has made the names of the 47 prefectures in Japan (Prefecture Labels) specified in the "Prefecture Type JP Domain Name" space that it administers available in Japanese, in addition to ASCII (alphanumeric) characters, as of Monday, 3 November 2014 (national holiday) as originally planned.

A Prefecture Type JP Domain Name such as "example.aomori.jp," "example.tokyo.jp" and "example.nagasaki.jp" contains a Prefecture Label at the second level on the immediate left of ".jp". With this introduction of Prefecture Labels in Japanese, names consisting of Japanese characters at both the second and third levels can be registered and utilized, as shown in the following examples:

○○うどん.香川.jp

JPRS has actively participated in IETF [*1] to engage in standardization of the Internationalized Domain Name (IDN) [*2] technologies and has steadily improved the IDN usage environment over the years. Moreover, by introducing the Japanese Prefecture Labels, JPRS as the registry for .JP is contributing to the growth and usage of Japanese JP domain names as well as IDNs.
