Application for New gTLD ".jprs" Passes Initial Evaluation

Japan Registry Services Co., Ltd. (JPRS: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Koki Higashida) today announced that its application to operate the new gTLD ".jprs" has successfully passed ICANN's[*1] initial evaluation.

After accepting the applications for the new gTLDs, under its New gTLD Program[*2], ICANN has been evaluating them against their technical and financial criteria. Since March 2013, ICANN has started to publish the evaluation results as they become available.

JPRS submitted an application for ".jprs" as a TLD with the primary purpose of research and development in relation to the Internet. It is intended to provide an environment where autonomous research pertaining to the Internet can be conducted, and to serve a wide purpose with the knowledge gained through its operations.

".jprs" will be used not only for studies carried out by JPRS, but also for collaborative research and development with the relevant technology communities, academic institutions and accredited bussiness partners. Unlike the existing gTLDs, ".jprs" will not be accepting registrations from the public at large, and JPRS itself will be the sole registrant of ".jprs."

As an enterprise that supports the foundation of the network infrastructure, JPRS will continue to make further efforts to improve the quality of its services, and thereby contributing to the development of the Internet and the building of a better future for everyone.

Glossary

*1. ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers)
http://www.icann.org/
It is the private sector, non-profit corporation created in 1998 in the US to coordinate Internet infrastructure resources including domain names, IP addresses, protocols and root servers.
*2. New gTLD Program
ICANN introduced the new gTLDs (generic top-level domains such as ".com" and ".net") by holding two rounds for applications, one in 2000 and another in 2003. In those rounds, ICANN set the maximum number of gTLDs to be created. In the current third round that started in 2012, the number of new gTLDs is not limited; in principle, new gTLD applications that meet the criteria specified by ICANN will be approved. ICANN accepted applications until May 30, 2012, and has been evaluating the applications against technical and other requirements since June 13, 2012.
